I just stumbled on live coverage of something called the 2025 FARA Miami Grand Prix from Homestead-Miami Speedway. I can't imagine an amateur racing event even being LEGAL in my home state, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I loved the Hispanic flavor of the podium ceremony but I found the announcer's accent amusing. He started out speaking English with a neutral American accent and switched to (I assume) Spanish when he'd interview the drivers, most of whose linguistic ability was strictly ESL, at best. Then, he'd switch back to English but with a decided Spanish accent! And back and forth it went, seamlessly. True bilingualism is a wonderful thing!
Reminds me of summer vacations with my parents in Surfside, drinking alcohol-free piña coladas at open-air bars in Miami. My parents' beverages were, I'm guessing, adult.
The myth that all Republicans are anti-Hispanic bigots is just that. My boyhood heroes were not baseball players but Formula One drivers, most of whom were either European or South American.
PS: the closing ceremonies at Homestead ended at least half an hour ago but there's an open mic sending love through my headphones as the racing continues, announcer-free. Delightful!
road trip to Sebring after work!
